Paint, refinish or reface?

Three ways to change how cabinets look, at very different prices. Knowing which one you want makes every estimate easier to compare.

Painting

New color over the cabinets you have. Done well, that means degreasing, sanding, priming and a sprayed enamel, not a weekend of brushing.

Refinishing

Renewing the existing wood finish: stripping or scuffing, a new stain or clear coat, and repairs. It keeps the wood grain on show.

Refacing

New doors and drawer fronts, with veneer over the cabinet boxes. More money and more change, without tearing out the cabinets.

What a fine finish takes

Most of the work is invisible. Ask any pro you talk to how they handle each of these.

  1. Doors off, everything labeled

Doors, drawers and hardware come off so every edge gets coated and everything goes back where it was.

  2. Clean, sand, repair

Kitchen grease is the enemy of adhesion. Surfaces are degreased, scuffed and filled before any primer goes on.

  3. Prime for grip

A bonding primer made for slick, previously finished surfaces, sanded smooth between coats.

  4. Spray a cabinet-grade finish

A hard, cabinet-rated coating, applied in thin even coats, then given time to cure before heavy use.
